A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is altered. Blood flow to the brain can be affected by either a blocked blood vessel or a ruptured blood vessel. Whether a blood vessel is blocked or ruptured determines the type of stroke it is. There are two main types of stroke:

Ischemic Stroke

An Ischemic stroke is cause is caused by a blockage in a blood vessel in the brain. This is the most common type of stroke. The heart pumps blood to the brain in order to carry out various functions. The brain cells, or neurons, depend on this blood pumped to the brain for nutrients and oxygen. If an artery to a specific part of the brain is blocked, the neurons in that area will not be able to create enough energy and will eventually cease to function. If the artery is blocked for long enough, the neurons will die. The longer a blood vessel remains blocked, the more damage is done. That is why it is crucial to act as quickly as possible in the event of a stroke.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

Hemorrhagic strokes are less common, but are typically more severe. This type of stroke is caused by a ruptured blood vessel or artery, and is more likely to be fatal than an Ischemic stroke. When a blood vessel bursts, or ruptures, it bleeds into the surrounding area of the brain. An example of this is a brain aneurysm. A brain aneurysm occurs in a weakened area of an artery. if the aneurysm bursts, it bleeds into the brain, resulting in a stroke.

Symptoms of a Stroke

Immediate action is required in the instance of a stroke. The more time a stroke goes untreated, the more potentially damaging it can be. If not attended to in adequate time, the harmful results can be long-term or even permanent. Here are some early warning signs to watch out for:

• One side of the face is numb or drooping
• Weakness or numbness in one arm
• Slurred speech
• Blurred vision
• Headache
• Loss of motor skills
• Dizziness
• Muscle stiffness
