Being a caregiver can be a helpful and satisfying endeavor, but also a challenging one. Sometimes caregivers need a break, and a chance to step away from the situation, in order to recharge. That is where respite caregivers come into the picture.

What is Respite Care?

Respite Care for

Respite care is temporary or intermittent care provided in substitution of the regular caregiver. Respite care affords much needed relief for caregivers, so they can rest and take care of anything they may have been neglecting in their daily lives.

Many caregivers fail to consider respite care as an option because they are nervous about leaving their loved one for any period of time. They also might be apprehensive about leaving their loved in the hands of a stranger. But, if you are providing full time care for your loved one, a break is going to be necessary eventually.

At Retire-At-Home Toronto our caregivers are here to help out and provide temporary relief if you are feeling burnt out. Our caregivers are compassionate and caring, and are trained to tend to your loved ones needs, whatever they may be.

Here are some tips on how to begin the process.

Make a List

What will your loved one need in your absence? A helpful practice is to compose a list while you are working through your daily routine. Make note of any useful tips that can be passed along to a respite caregiver. Some items to consider may be:

  • Medications
  • Exercise routines
  • Meals/diet
  • Medical appointments
  • Social events
  • Helpful hints for dealing with your loved one’s unique personality

Communication

It is a good idea to have an open discussion with your loved one about respite care so you can get idea of how receptive they are to the concept. You can talk about how much time respite care services will be required, and who will be filling in for you. Ask your loved one how they feel about this idea and what their expectations are. This way, when it comes time for the respite caregiver to take over, there is no awkwardness or feelings of resentment.

Put a positive spin on it. This is a good chance to interact with new people and enjoy new experiences. Novel social interaction is positive for emotional and mental health. Change can be a good way to break up mundane daily routines and they may learn some new activities they enjoy.

What Type of Service Do You Need?

Respite care can come in many different forms. There options for in-home care, day visits, or your loved can do a temporary stay at a care residence. Think about the level of support your loved one needs on a daily basis. Do you just need someone to come in for a few hours during the day, or will you need full time care? Are you looking to have respite care for a block of time (like a few weeks), or have a caregiver come in twice a week for intermittent relief?
